BMW Z4 3.0i vs E46 330i: Same Engine, Lower Price, More Fun

Ask around for a fun used BMW and everyone points you at the E46 325i or 330i. What most buyers overlook: the first-generation BMW Z4 (E85) uses the same M54 engine, weighs less, and sells for less. In our spring 2025 analysis of the German used-car market, the average Z4 3.0i came out at €14,571 against €17,051 for an E46 330i. Same 231 hp straight-six, roughly €2,500 cheaper.

Same engine, different badge

The E46 330i and the pre-2005 Z4 3.0i both run BMW's M54B30: a 3.0-litre naturally aspirated inline-6 making 231 hp. The E46 325i pairs the same way with the Z4 2.5i (M54B25, 192 hp). Same block, same head, same intake, same gearboxes.

The Z4 is roughly 130 kg lighter, so the same engine makes it the quicker car. Even E46 owners admit as much in PistonHeads and E46 Fanatics threads asking exactly this question.

Is the M54 reliable?

The M54 has a reputation as one of BMW's most dependable naturally aspirated sixes. Port fuel injection keeps the intake valves clean, so there is none of the carbon build-up and walnut blasting that plagues modern direct-injection engines. BMWBlog's M54 guide and long-term owner reports put well-maintained engines past 300,000 km.

Budget for the known wear items, identical on both cars:

• Oil filter housing gasket (the classic M54 leak)
• DISA valve (intake flap rattle)
• VANOS seals (low-end torque loss)
• Cooling system: expansion tank and water pump are service items, not failures

What the price data says

For this article we ran a market analysis of cars offered for sale in Germany between February and April 2025 (undamaged petrol cars, prices in EUR):

• BMW E46 330i: 109 cars, average €17,051, median €17,500
• BMW Z4 3.0i (E85): 30 cars, average €14,571, median €14,750
• BMW E46 325i: 53 cars, average €9,583, median €8,490
• BMW Z4 2.5i (E85): 75 cars, average €10,497, median €10,900

The headline holds for the 3.0-litre pairing: the Z4 3.0i averages €2,480 less than the E46 330i for the identical M54B30, about 15% off, and the median gap is even wider at €2,750. The 2.5-litre pairing goes the other way, though. A Z4 2.5i actually averages around €900 more than an E46 325i, so the bargain is specifically the 3.0i roadster, not the whole Z4 range.

That fits the wider market picture: E46 values keep climbing on enthusiast and drift demand, while the Z4 E85 is still called an undervalued hidden gem by Klipnik and Classic & Sports Car.

When the E46 is still the right call

The Z4 is not a better E46 for everyone.

• If you need back seats or a real boot, the Z4 has neither. Two seats, weekend luggage at best.
• For year-round daily driving the E46 coupé or sedan is quieter, more practical and easier to live with.
• The Z4's soft top is one more thing to maintain on a 20-year-old car.

If the car must do family or commuting duty, buy the E46 and never look back. If the car is a second car for fun, the Z4 gives you the same engine with sharper responses for less money.
